Openers that actually get a reply

"Hi" is where chats go to die. Steal one of these instead:

01

“Rate my last meal: [what you actually ate]. Be honest.”

Food is universal, low-stakes, and instantly personal.

02

“What time is it where you are? I'm deciding if you're a morning person.”

Turns the random-global thing into the hook itself.

03

“One song you'd put on right now — I'll actually play it.”

Gives them a tiny job. People love tiny jobs.

04

“What's something your city does better than anywhere else?”

Everyone has a proud answer, and it opens ten follow-ups.

The unwritten rules of chatting to strangers

  • 🎣Ask, then actually read the answer. The fastest way to be interesting is to be interested — follow up on what they said, not on your script.
  • ⏱️Give it ninety seconds. First messages are awkward for everyone. If it's still flat after a real attempt, skip guilt-free.
  • 🌍Lean into the distance. A stranger nine time zones away is the whole appeal — ask what their normal looks like, and let the translation handle the rest.
  • 🚪Leave like a person. A one-line "gotta go, this was fun" costs nothing and keeps the whole place friendlier.

Stay safe while you chat

  • 🛡️Keep your full name, address, workplace and socials out of the chat — a stranger stays a stranger until you decide otherwise.
  • 🚩Anyone pushing for money, off-site links or personal photos is a skip and a report, not a negotiation.
  • 👁️If someone crosses a line, open their profile page — report and block both live there. Report opens its own page where you pick a reason and describe what happened.
  • 💬Not ready to be on camera? Pick text or voice only before you match — neither one asks for your camera, while video chat needs camera permission before it can start.

Chatting to strangers — common questions

It's as safe as your habits plus the platform's guardrails. Keep identifying details private and skip anyone who pressures you. There is a moderation team here — people alongside automated systems, around the clock — and if someone crosses a line, open their profile page: report and block both live there, and report opens its own page where you describe what happened.

The best opener is just showing up.
